VBScript

The term ASP is usually taken to mean a Visual Basic-like language (VBScript) that is mixed with HTML. VBScript is a simplified subset of Visual Basic that allows complex database driven web sites to be produced. The VBScript is enclosed within the special HTML tags <% and %>.

You can use languages other than VBScript in an ASP page -- JavaScript for example. Gotham only produces code for the VBScript versions of ASP.
